Onkaparinga Waterwatch Network

What OWN Measures
In addition to educating the community, Waterwatch also is involved in collecting data on the health of local waterways.

The water quality monitoring is undertaken by community groups across the area.

In carrying out this acitivity volunteers measure phosphate, nitrate, total dissolved solids (salinity), dissolved oxygen, pH, turbidity, temperature and flow rate.

Some groups also sample macro-invertebrates regularly and the Waterwatch record sheet encourages groups to record frogs present at their sample sites.

During 2001, 70 monitoring kits have been distributed to OWN groups. These kits enable groups to do their own testing on site for most parameters, with extra samples provided to OWN for testing of Nitrates and Phosphates.
