Students taking part in Gutter Guardians

During the autumn months the Onkaparinga Waterwatch Network conducts a popular program that assists educators to teach students about the importance of keeping gutters free of leaves and other pollutants

Shown below are a range of activities for educators. They include interesting fact sheets and a variety of new follow up activities, experiments and games that will help make your program informative, educational and lots of fun!

Contains information on

  • Instructions - How to conduct a Gutter Sweep: so easy and lots of fun for the kids! Teachers can conduct the sweep themselves.
  • Result Sheet - Record all of the pollution you have prevented from entering our waterways. .We would like to encourage parents and residents to help facilitate the gutter sweep.
  • Invitation and survey - You can choose to invite parents and/or local residents who live on your designated street. A survey is included that can be sent home with students or could be conducted with residents living on your chosen street. This will help to educate and evaluate community perceptions about Autumn leaf fall.
    > Student worksheet - stormwater survey Students are given the opportunity to calculate the amount of materials they collect during a gutter sweep
    >Too Many Leaves Information and question sheet for students
  Danny the Drip Activity >Story and activity Danny the Drip is an active visual exercise for students from R-4, emphasising the variety of pollutants that can enter waterways and how they accumulate. It shows the progressive deterioration of a river as it makes its way from the hills, through the catchment out towards the sea. (Includes a follow up activity.)
  Effect of land use on stormwater >Background information

Included in this activity are 4 sheets that show a different type of landuse. Students read out information about their type of land use and the
affect it has on stormwater.
